How to screen record on Windows 11 (2026)

Record your screen on Windows 11 with Xbox Game Bar, Snipping Tool, or Showesome in Chrome — fix Game Bar no sound, capture tab audio, set mic permissions, and export MP4.

How to screen record on Windows 11 (2026)

Yes — you can screen record on Windows 11 with built-in tools (Xbox Game Bar, Snipping Tool) or with Showesome in Chrome for tab audio, webcam overlay, and local MP4 export. Game Bar is fine for quick game or app clips; Chrome is better when you need browser tab sound, narration, or tutorial features in one workflow.

This guide covers all three paths, why Game Bar often has no sound, and when to switch to Chrome.

Quick start — Showesome in Chrome on Windows: popup, share dialog, and first recording

Built-in Windows tools vs Showesome in Chrome

Game Bar / Snipping Tool Showesome (Chrome on Windows)
Install Already on Windows 11 Chrome Web Store — free
Fastest path Win + G (Game Bar) or Win + Shift + S (Snipping Tool video) Pin extension → Start Recording
Tab / browser audio Captures app or game audio when settings are right — not the same as Chrome tab audio Also share tab audio in Chrome’s share dialog (guide)
Webcam bubble Game Bar Camera widget (separate overlay) Screen + Camera in one clip
Click-to-zoom tutorials No Focus Mode
Export Captures folder (Game Bar) or chosen save location Local in Chrome → preview → Convert to MP4
Watermark None on built-in tools No watermark on Showesome
Best for Quick gameplay, single-app demos Lessons, async updates, Chrome tab tutorials with sound

Record with Xbox Game Bar (Win + G)

Xbox Game Bar is the default screen recorder on Windows 10 and 11:

  1. Open the app or game you want to record.
  2. Press Win + G to open Game Bar.
  3. Click the Record button (circle icon) or press Win + Alt + R to start.
  4. Click Stop on the capture widget when finished.
  5. Clips save to Videos → Captures (or This PC → Videos → Captures).

Game Bar can record microphone narration and system / app audio when configured — see Game Bar no sound below.

Record with Snipping Tool (Windows 11)

Snipping Tool added screen recording in Windows 11:

  1. Press Win + Shift + S (or open Snipping Tool from Start).
  2. Switch to Record mode (video camera icon).
  3. Drag a region of the screen to record.
  4. Click Start → perform your demo → Stop.
  5. Preview and Save the clip.

Snipping Tool is great for short regional captures. It does not replace tab audio + webcam + Focus Mode for polished Chrome tutorials.

Why Xbox Game Bar has no sound

Silent Game Bar clips usually mean the wrong audio source, a muted app, or mic permission blocked — not a broken file.

What you expected What to check
Game or app sound missing Game Bar SettingsCapturingAudio to record: All (not Game only)
Browser / YouTube tab sound Game Bar records the app window — browser tab audio may not route the way Chrome’s tab audio share does; prefer Showesome + Chrome tab for web tutorials
Your voice missing Enable Mic on the Game Bar capture widget; allow microphone for Xbox Game Bar in Windows privacy settings
Everything muted Volume mixer (right-click speaker) — unmute Chrome, the app, and Xbox Game Bar

Fix Game Bar audio step by step

  1. Press Win + G → open Settings (gear icon on Game Bar).
  2. Go to Capturing.
  3. Set Audio to record to All.
  4. Under Windows settings, confirm SettingsPrivacy & securityMicrophone allows access (for voiceover).
  5. Right-click the speaker iconVolume mixer → confirm the target app and Game Bar are not muted.
  6. Record a 10-second test with narration and app sound playing.

In Xbox Game Bar Capturing settings, set Audio to record to All when clips have no sound

Record with Showesome in Chrome on Windows

For tab audio + mic + webcam in one workflow:

1. Install and pin Showesome

  1. Open Showesome in the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to ChromeAdd extension.
  3. Pin Showesome from the Extensions puzzle piece.

Details: Enable and pin the extension.

2. Allow Windows privacy permissions for Chrome

Showesome runs inside Google Chrome. Windows must allow Chrome to use camera and microphone:

  1. Open SettingsPrivacy & securityMicrophone (and Camera if using webcam).
  2. Turn Microphone access On and allow Google Chrome.
  3. Restart Chrome and record a 10-second test clip.

Screen capture uses Chrome’s share dialog — there is no separate Windows “Screen Recording” toggle like macOS. If the share picker never opens, see Chrome permissions fix guide.

3. Start recording with tab audio

  1. Open Showesome → pick Screen Only or Screen + Camera.
  2. Select your Microphone if you are narrating.
  3. Click Start Recording.
  4. In Chrome’s share dialog, choose Chrome tab (or window / entire screen).
  5. Turn on Also share tab audio when the tab plays sound.
  6. Click ShareStop when done → Convert to MP4 from Recordings History.

In Chrome’s share dialog, enable Also share tab audio when recording a tab that plays sound

Common Windows workflows

Goal Suggested approach
Quick gameplay clip Win + G Game Bar
Short UI bug in one region Snipping Tool record mode
Screen + your voice only Game Bar with mic on, or Showesome Screen Only + mic
YouTube / web app with sound Showesome + Chrome tab + tab audio
Google Slides lesson Showesome Screen + Camera + Focus Mode
Meet / Zoom you host in a tab Tab recording + tab audio — Meet/Zoom guide
Polished tutorial, no OBS Showesome + webcam bubble

Windows troubleshooting

Problem What to try
Game Bar clip has no sound Audio to record: All, volume mixer, mic permission (above)
Game Bar will not open SettingsGamingXbox Game Bar → turn On; update Windows
Chrome share dialog missing Update Chrome; close overlays that block capture — permissions guide
Black camera bubble Camera access for Chrome in Windows privacy settings
Tab sound missing in Chrome clip Also share tab audio in share dialog — no sound guide
Recording stutters Close heavy apps; lower quality preset — 4K & presets

Do I need OBS on Windows?

Usually no for standard web tutorials. OBS vs Chrome screen recorder — OBS wins for live streaming and multi-scene production; a Chrome extension is faster for tab walkthroughs and local MP4 export.

Can I use Edge instead of Chrome?

Showesome is a Chrome extension — install Google Chrome for Showesome’s full feature set (Focus Mode, virtual backgrounds, local library). Edge has its own capture tools but not Showesome.

Does Showesome work on Windows 10?

Yes, on any Windows version that runs current Google Chrome. This guide focuses on Windows 11 UI labels (Snipping Tool video, updated Settings); Game Bar steps are largely the same on Windows 10.

Quick checklist

  1. Quick clip? Win + G (Game Bar) or Snipping Tool record mode.
  2. Need tab or web sound? Showesome in Chrome + Also share tab audio.
  3. Game Bar silent? Audio to record: All + check Volume mixer.
  4. Permissions — allow Google Chrome for Microphone / Camera in Windows settings.
  5. Export — Game Bar Captures folder or Showesome MP4 from preview.
